Environmental Factoids Producing pulp and paper casts a long ecological shadow beyond its impact on the world's forests. Converting trees into paper and paper products like envelopes, use large amounts of water, energy, and chemicals and can generate vast amounts of air and water pollution. The pulp and paper industry is the fifth largest consumer of energy, accounting for 4 percent of all the world's energy use. The pulp and paper industry uses more water to produce a ton of product than any other industry. Worldwatch Institute, “Paper Cuts: Recovering the Paper Landscape” December 1999 Businesses play a pivotal role in reshaping the future of waste reduction and paper consumption. 40% percent of office paper products still end up in overburdened landfills. Expanding the reuse of paper products reduces the pressure to cut more trees, reduces demand on overburdened waste disposal systems and cuts energy use and pollution. Reusing 1000 envelopes saves the paper for producing 1000 envelopes which is far more efficient than using a new envelope every time a bill is paid or business correspondence is sent through the mail. By sending a reusable envelope made with recycled post consumer content, each letter you send can send a message that your organization cares about the environment. What better way to let people know that you are saving energy, natural resources, and reducing landfill waste than by the one to one contact you get when you send someone something through the mail?
EcoAudit – ecoenvelopes Here is an ECOAudit showing the environmental savings by eliminating a second envelope. This is based on the calculator found on the Alliance for Environmental Innovation website, click on the link for Business Tools and click on Calculator. http://www.environmentaldefense.org/alliance/tips.htm Information entered New Leaf Paper provided the following information to do the calculations: For 1,000 No. 9 envelopes it takes 13 lbs of paper. So 1M x 1M = 1 MM envelopes 13 x 1,000 = 13,000 lbs of paper or roughly 6.5 tons of paper. What calculates is everything that is not generated when we eliminate 6.5 tons of paper for 1 million reply envelopes. Here’s what the calculator came up with when I put in these numbers. Remember this is what is used to make 1 MM No. 9 envelopes so eliminating the No. 9 envelope eliminates the production and use of all of these resources and pollutants.
